Well, its January and even being from Canada this Ohio deep freeze is killing me! Despite this obnoxiously cold weather, I’m the kind of gal who loves a new year! I see it as an opportunity to start fresh and attempt new goals. Blogging is my latest business venture so I’ve already envisioned what I’d like to accomplish with it this year.
I think it’s physically impossible for me to start something from scratch on a Wednesday, it’s got to be a Monday! Who starts a diet on Wednesday?? Unless Wednesday falls on the first day of the month, than I’m in! There’s just something about the beginning of the week, month, and year that helps to motivate me.
A few years ago I took up flipping furniture as a way to make extra cash while I stayed home with my babies. It was the last thing I thought I would do, let alone be good at!
Since that time I’ve not only been a part of creating a very successful furniture flipping business with my sister, I’ve also started this blog as another means of income. Neither of these were even a thought in my mind 3 years ago, which is why I think this post is so important to share with you!
Starting a business may be something you’ve never considered, or you’ve considered it but don’t know what to do, where to start, or even how in the world you’ll have time for it!
I’ve got three kids that are 6, 4 and 2, plus I’m due any day with my fourth!
I started my latest business venture (my blog) when I was 4 months pregnant with this baby, trust me, if you want to start there’s just no time like the present!
I Figured Out What I’m Good At.
I’m a pretty easy-going girl and because of that I usually just go along with whatever anyone else wants to do, and that has always been OK, I liked it that way. Unfortunately, if you do that your whole life you’ll always be doing what other people like to do and never really know what YOU like doing.
Sometimes sticking to what we know keeps us in our comfort zone, I really hate trying something and sucking at it… don’t we all?!
You really won’t know what you’re good at if you never try anything new. For example, I can’t draw a decent stick figure, thus it was obvious to me that my abilities were not to be found in anything artistic or creative in any way…but that wasn’t true.
Turns out I’m really good at making ugly old furniture look pretty, I just use a little creativity(that I never thought I had!). I would never have known that if I had never tried.
On the other hand, I’ve ALWAYS loved writing, English was one of my best subjects and so starting a blog made perfect sense.
Some things you know you’re good at and some things you just need to try!

I Figured Out What I Love To Do, And I Went For It.
Once I painted my first piece of furniture, listed it for sale, and sold it within a day, I fell in love with Flipping Furniture. I finally found something I liked doing AND I was good at it! I found great satisfaction in the whole process, plus I could do it and still spend as much time with my kids and my husband as I wanted and needed to. It was a win-win.
Is there something you’ve seen someone else do that you wish you were able to do? Whether it be crafting, decorating, photography, art, music, cooking, organizing, building, designing, teaching, health, beauty, writing, marketing…etc etc.
There are options in all of these areas that can be done from your home! These days there are so many ways available for making extra money thanks to internet access and the amazing world of Social Media.
I learned most of my painting techniques on YouTube and Pinterest. If there is something you’re interested in learning there are tutorials and courses available at your finger tips to get you started!
Flipping Furniture for Profit
About a year into flipping furniture I took a course that taught me aspects of the business I had never even considered. I literally started making at least twice the profit I was making prior to the course PLUS our Facebook business page started growing like crazy! It was worth every penny and more, I highly recommend it!
We basically make as much money as we want based on how much time we are willing to invest, it’s pretty amazing. I highly recommend you give Flipping Furniture a try, you may love it as much as I do!

Blogging for Profit
When my husband suggested blogging to me back in August I thought, surely no one makes money doing that unless they are celebrities! Then I started reading about all the ways you can make money blogging and I was shocked! It opened my eyes to this completely new concept that I had never even considered.
Just like I did with flipping furniture, I began researching how to start a successful blog. There were so many free resources provided by experienced bloggers that it wasn’t very difficult to figure out the best way to start. I knew I loved Flipping Furniture and DIY so finding what I might want to write about was pretty easy.
Here are some of the tips I learned and have found incredibly useful for starting a successful blog;
Start a WordPress blog on Bluehost.
Bluehost is one of the top web hosting companies out there and you can have a blog of your own very quickly and inexpensively! There are free options out there to start a blog such as Blogger and Blogspot. The problem with using those options is that if you hope to make an income blogging, your chances of being successful go WAY down, to almost zero.
The reason for this is that advertisers see those types of sites as unprofessional and thus your odds of being accepted into affiliate programs or being approached for sponsorship are really small. The good news is that being self hosted is really inexpensive (currently $3.95 per month with Bluehost) I paid my year upfront when I got started and I haven’t had any issues and I have no complaints.
I have the basic package and it covers everything I need.
You can start your WordPress blog on Bluehost right here.
Learn how to market your blog and get lots of traffic.
This takes some trial and error! I learned that Pinterest is actually one of the leading ways to drive traffic to my blog, who knew??!! Here I thought Pinterest was just about pinning a million ideas that I never actually try 😉
I basically revamped my entire Pinterest account and went from about 50 followers to almost 900 as of right now after I took this AWESOME course called Pinteresting Strategies, it’s super inexpensive and I highly recommend it! You can get it right here ->Pinteresting Strategies
If you are planning on taking the course I recommend doing so before launching your blog. If I could have a do-over i’d be better prepared BEFORE letting my blog go live.
Get your Pinterest account ready and a Facebook business page started ( If you don’t know how to start a Facebook Business Page, check out my post How To: Start a Facebook Business Page, it takes less than 15 minutes and its free).
You’ll read everywhere how Pinterest is the way to go to drive traffic to your blog or business, and it really IS fantastic, but it’s never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket.
I use Facebook as another free way to drive traffic to my blog. Having a Facebook business page is super important and it’s a great tool to advertise your blog or business. You can view my post on how to market for free on Facebook right here ->3 Effective Ways to Grow Your Facebook Business Page Without Spending a Dime.
Learn how to start making money blogging.
This was the part that blew my mind! My husband sent me a post from an extremely successful blogger (Making Sense of Cents) about how she was making $50,000 A MONTH blogging, yes that’s in one month!! It has since gone up and she’s making well over a million dollars a year just from blogging! WHAT??!!from
Obviously my curiosity was more than a little pricked! I signed up for her free blogging course and from there I followed her suggestions on starting my own blog on WordPress using Bluehost.
After about a month of blogging I was getting decent traffic but I wasn’t really making any money. After reading all the amazing reviews about Michelle’s Affiliate Marketing course, and I mean, the woman makes over 100,000$ A MONTH blogging, she must know what she’s doing!! I decided to go for it and signed up for it.
I loved it, in fact, you can’t absorb all the information just going through one time, I need to go through it all again! If you’re wanting to know how to make money blogging, this course shares every strategy and detail you need to know.
It was extremely helpful in helping me understand how to find and join affiliate programs, how and where to use affiliate links and really every aspect of monetizing my blog the proper and most effective way.
Sure enough, soon after going through her course I started making my first affiliate sales!
If you’re interested in making serious money blogging you can check out the course I took below.
Blogging turned out to be a lot harder than I originally thought. It takes time and determination. Even so, after 4 months of doing it I am more convinced than ever that this is an awesome way to make money and help other people at the same time. Plus it’s really fun!
Staying at home with my kids is definitely the best thing that I get to do. The greatest thing about these side jobs I do is that I make my own schedule.
I might spend a total of 8 hours a week on my blog, and I’ve taken a break from flipping furniture due to being so far along in my pregnancy but generally that would have been even less time than blogging! I can work more or less, it’s really up to me, and it would be up to you too!
For the most part, it doesn’t interfere with my most important job, which is taking care of my sweet family.
Our most challenging task as moms who work from home is to remember to keep a healthy balance and not lose focus on what’s MOST important, those tiny people who have been entrusted to us by God.
